The Sanctuary began as The Congregational Church of South Amherst in 1839. The building has seen many changes since it was built. Our historian tells us that there used to be two entrances at the front...one for the women and one for the men. Of course the men and women did not sit together either. Heated by the wood burning fireplace and with no running water, the church thrived as an off shoot of Charles Finney's ministry. So, even before automobiles were the common form of transportation and horses were tied to the posts, the church has been alive with the Word.

The Sanctuary, as it is called now, is an interdenominational church where the spirit moves freely, and has undergone many changes over the years. The building, of course has plumbing and central air, and the people have changed as well. They have grown spiritually and consider themselves more than a church body. They are family. They desire for everyone to come and fellowship with them and feel the presence of Christ in their lives.

With its cozy, intimate atmosphere and great photo opportunities on the front steps, many couples have been united in marriage in the chapel of The Sanctuary.

The verse behind our name, The Sanctuary
